2010 Mission Trip to Juarez, Mexico

The 2010 Mexico mission trip marks the 13th anniversary of trips to Juarez. To be eligible age-wise, youth must be in 7th grade or higher. The youth, along with several adults, serve by proclaiming the Gospel and meeting the physical needs of people in Mexico.

The training and preparation of the team involved a 50 day Bible study, 5 training meetings over several weeks and a witnessing project in Pierre. Team members were required to participate in other ministries such as CrossTrainers at the Pierre Indian Learning Center and encouraged to help with Vacation Bible School. Added to this are various work projects to learn how to work together as a team. These work projects, primarily yard work, are also a means of raising funds to cover the trip expenses. mission kids The work projects are done on a donation basis only. The only other fund raiser is the annual Chili Feed with the donations being split among the youth. Mucho gracias to everyone who supports the mission trip.

The trip down to Juarez and back are not idle time. Stops made during the trip are opportunities to do street evangelism, pass out Gospel tracts, and do some other fun activities as well. While in Mexico, the team helps with various construction projects such as painting, roofing, carpentry, and concrete to name a few. Past work has involved working on the orphanage, in public schools and homes plus helping with clothes distributions. In addition to the work projects, the team uses skits and puppet shows to share the “Good News” of salvation through Jesus Christ! Many people are under the impression that they are good enough to go to Heaven. Do you think you are good enough? Find out!

Daily (or some semblance thereof) updates from 2009 trip:

Day 10 Somewhat reluctantly we headed out from Glen Eyrie today. This place is incredibly beautiful and a nice place to catch a breather from a busy trip. We started out with a Sunday morning service, at a continental breakfast at the castle and then set out for Denver for the Rockies baseball game. A tornado warning was issued during the game temporarily suspending play with people being instructed to take shelter in the concourses. This was an excellent opportunity to get out the baseball tracts since people were milling about the concourses with nothing to do but read their tracts. About 2,300 tracts with the Gospel were distributed during the game. After the game we headed for the motel to get ready to attend the traditional Cheesecake Factory dress up affair. There are bunch of pictures of the kids dressed up for a fun evening meal. This will be the last entry for this Mexico Mission trip. I left the team Sunday evening to get Layne to an activity at Brookings. Consequently, no bus ride home for me on Monday so I have no pictures on the final leg of the trip. Thank you everyone for your prayer support. The trip this year hung by a number of threads concerning whether or not it would even occur. In hindsight I had the best Mexico mission trip ever and that is not to say that the others were not fruitful because they were. It just seems we had an extra measure of grace this year as we stepped out in faith and God went to work. Thanks again for everyone’s support! Day 9 Today we got an early start from our Trinidad host church and made our way to Denny’s in Pueblo Colorado. After that we continued on to Colorado Springs and made a brief (by lady standards) at the Citadel Mall. Following that we made our way Glen Eyrie and split into hiking groups and rock climbing groups. The hike involved a fair amount of rock climbing and creek scaling in its own right. Penny slipped toward the end of the hike and sprained her ankle which now has additional colors. She can walk on her ankle but we insisted she not overdo the walking and got a ride for her to and from the evening meal at the castle. We were stranded at the castle after the meal due to rain. Following the rain we went to a campfire site and then ordered pizza to finish off the evening. Tomorrow we go to Denver to a Rockies game and some tract distribution on the 16th Street Mall. Day 8 We got up early to head home today and left around 6:30 AM. It took a little over an hour to get across the border. We had to get out of the vans and walk through security carrying everything that was in the 3 vans. At least we didn’t need to unload the trailer! The passports were looked at for the first time in my experience. We made a quick stop at the Flying J near El Paso and then headed to White Sands. Another first here was a relatively cool day with a pretty good breeze. Every other time it was warmer and almost still. The sand was actually drifting today. After that break we made our way to the Garcia home where we got to meet Sylvia on her birthday. We had a great meal and a lot of fun relaxing off the bus. As I write this we are about 20 minutes out from Trinidad Colorado where we will spend the evening at a church. Glad I have a pad to sleep on! Day 7 In our fourth day we started the day as usual with some praise time, group devotions, and personal study time. After that we headed out to our work projects. We finished up painting 5 homes with 120 gallons of paint that came in 55 gallons drums. The final color had to be mixed on-site in 5 gallon pails and then carried to the homes by as much as half a block because the roads were narrow and very steep. The paint also had big white clods that gave some surprise tinting. The roof crew completed 7 roofs and the construction crew got an area approximately 30 X 40 feet prepared for pouring a concrete floor across the street from the mission. Carlos being present all week was great for everything being in place for the kids getting to work and just a general moral booster – he is a fun guy with a passion for people. During the evening we held the traditional game night. Group 7 won the event (that would be my group:). Many thanks to those who so generously supported by providing the prizes won by the kids. We also had a team from Chico, California show up and spend the evening with us. The night got late and that is why you are reading this after the fact. Day 6 Our third day of work projects – yet more painting, prep for placing concrete and doing roofing. Some of the newbies (first year missionaries) got as much tar on themselves as on the roof. I never did find the TV news story on the TV website maybe someone else will fare better. We did our VBS with the kids in the afternoon and finished up our work day. We came back to the base, ate and then back to the blue house for an evening outreach service. We did the drama and then John spoke to the attendees. Before that started we went around the surrounding neighborhood and distributed Bibles and invited people to attend the service. Several people responded to the invitation to put their faith in Jesus – very nice way to end the evening. They also had a band playing and it appears the kids liked that. I used photos from Layne’s camera as well so when it appears that the pictures are not in chronological order it’s because they’re not. The girls stole our mascot from the boy’s dorm and as one picture showed they (the old mascot and the new one) are now in girl’s possession. I am already over it but I am sure the boys are scheming – yeah we have some fun too. After tomorrow we will be heading back to the good ‘ol USA on Friday. Please keep praying for good health and safety on our last couple of days. Sorry for no labels on the pictures -- too tired, please use your imagination. However, you need to know that we have a great bunch of kids on this trip and you can be pleased with their service. God's Word is being spread far and wide. Day 5 Our second day of work projects – more painting, prep for placing concrete and roofing. We had a local news station (http://www.xejtv.com) stop by to do some filming for their local news. I suspect their motivation is to show how safe it is in Juarez. There is obviously and advertising promotion going on which is visible in street sign advertisements and stickers on vehicles. I tried to take a picture of the logo while we were driving. We also had some soldiers patrolling the neighborhood when we returned to the mission house. It is nice to see them around and they seem to be friendly – they take Bibles anyway with smiles. We had our evening meal at a nice restaurant and then distributed Bibles in a neighborhood or a pastor that helps Carlos. Health-wise there is nothing major to report. Keep those prayers coming! Day 4 Our first day of work projects and the weather cooperated nicely. It couldn't have been much more than the low to mid 90s. We are roofing, preparing to place a footing and foundation for a garage near the mission house and painting homes. Carlos will be here all week and he is a great help in having everything in place for the work projects. We are doing VBS with the children as you can tell by taking a look at the pictures. After the work projects we went to an areea we have worked in maybe a year or two ago and did an outreach event. Lots and lots of children were there. Many of the children expressed a desire to put their faith in Christ. We made a quick stop on the way home for an ice cream bar and then made it back safe and sound, although one of the vans had a bit of a scare with a bus. No major health concerns but we are having some kids with the typical Mexico ailments - headaches, bloody noses, running noses, etc. We do a bit of coveting - for prayers so keep them coming. Day 3 Nice to sleep in a bed last night that is for sure. We made our way to El Paso with on stop at Truth or Consequences. The gas station owner will only let in so many kids at one time since the fire marshall works there:) He told Steve that he knows our group and it is the best group he has stop. The kids let any other customers go the front and he doesn't worry about any stuff "disappearing." We made our traditional stop at Leo's for our final meal in the states and got to order of the menu rather than choosing "American plate" or "Mexican plate." We then unloaded our bus and loaded the mission vehicles to head into Juarez. We were briefly stopped at the border for a look inside the trailers and then we were on our way with having to unload anything. After unloading at the mission house we went on a Bible distribution downtown by the cathedral and surrounding streets. We passed out 1,300 Bibles within a half hour - incredible. After that we went to a park and performed our band, skit and drama mixed in with some local talent that you can see in the pictures. A good crowd gathered and heard the Gospel, received tracts and a Bible -- all told 2.000 Bibles were distributed. We then returned home for our evening meal and a quick grocery store run. A super day and we have had the usual upset tummies and headaches but no major illness. Keep praying things are going very well! Day 2 After rising nice and early we made a quick stop for donuts -- breakfast of champions. Everyone is doing pretty well health- wise although we had one tummy that was too upset. We did have time to stop in Santa Fe and do a track distribution. Again, we got out more tracts than usual which is especially good considering the location. Santa Fe is very liberal and the President Obama tracts went well and so did the "funny one-liners." We then made it to Albuquerque in time for our meal at P.F. Changs which was very good. After that we went to the Saturday evening service at Calvary Chapel and the message was on the importance of prayer -- very timely for our trip. We spent some time at the church bookstore and then headed for our motel after a quick stop at Wal-Mart. So far things have been going extremely well. Please keep those prayers coming. We serve an awesome God and you parents and church family have some great kids:) Tomorrow on to Juarez! Day 1 We are off to a really good start. I followed down in our vehicle since I need to get Layne back 1 day early so I missed the bus action today but will be on the bus tomorrow. As a result I used pictures from a different camera for the bus pictures so the pictures are not all in order of the events as they happened. I added a note to the pictures when things get out of order. So much for the trivia. We had the best day I have ever seen at the 16th Street mall and at Elitch Gardens (six flags). It was almost Mexico-like in terms of how many people were accepting the tracts. The President Obama tracts were very well received by people and, if he wasn't, then President Reagan was so our bases were covered. There were several good conversations held as well so we are very thankful to the Father for a wonderful first day. At Elitch Gardens, Bob Zabel braved the "Accelerator" after refusing to ride any ride prior to that. If you are unaware of what that ride is they lift you 152 feet on a rope and then drop you for that memorable free fall effect. After that bob was hopping on anything that moved. Time to call it a day -- 12:41 am at home. Also email is acting up on me which is why those of you who signed up may not have received an update. Day 0 Packing day today. As opportunity allows (which means when I can get a web connection) I will try to post photos and a short summary of the day's events. I think we have an excellent group this year and I am looking forward to see God at work. Be praying!!
