Deep Decay

This week’s elections on 11/4 delivered sobering results. In New York City, Zohran Mamdani, an avowed Democratic socialist (communist?), won the mayoral race. One of his policies is to invest “$65 million in public providers to provide gender-affirming care to New Yorkers who seek it” (Mamdani’s website). Yikes! In Virginia, the governorship was won by Democrat Abigail Spanberger. During her campaign, Spanberger was pressed to denounce comments from those in her political party (the Attorney General-elect) who made comments about murdering their political rivals. Not only did Spanberger not do that, but she even won her election. What’s going on?

One of my favorite public theologians, Andrew T. Walker, perceptively wrote this:

NYC just elected a Muslim socialist and antisemite as Mayor. Virginia’s new AG has fantasized about violence against conservatives. When voters knowingly choose leaders like this, it says something deeper about the condition of our culture. Arguments alone can’t reach minds that have already closed themselves to truth.

This is what judgment looks like. Christ is Lord.

I share his assessment. And to add a biblical passage that we all need to know considering the cultural decay: Rom 1:18–32. Specifically, society-wide “dishonorable passions” (v. 26) and “a debased mind” (v. 28) evidence God’s judgments. In other words, regardless of what happens, God remains in the driver’s seat—always. In the good and in the bad, God’s will prevails (Job 1:21). No need to fear. Christ is Lord.
