Defrag Your Mind

Growing up, when our computer lagged, my brother ran a process called “defragmentation.” To defrag a computer is to consolidate fragmented data to improve efficiency. This is a routine step of computer maintenance. I’ve always remembered that my brother would do this. Maybe it’s because I admired his knowledge of computers or that I found the term defragmentation interesting. It’s funny the things we remember. Nonetheless, just like computers, our minds need regular maintenance. At times, we need to defrag our minds through the power of the Spirit.
Maybe like you, I’ve had my eyes glued to a screen recently, wanting to learn more about the Charlie Kirk situation. What happened? What’s the motive? I’ve researched questions like that. Problematically, I’ve found that this preoccupation with media hinders and does not help my peace of mind. Constantly looking at a screen prevents my mind from wandering in the correct directions through the Spirit’s guidance. Recently, only by God’s grace, I’ve put the phone down more, and I’ve experienced times of joyful impromptu prayer, worship, and sobriety of thought.
Are you feeling anxious? Depressed? Hopeless? Some of the mental struggles we have result from the bad habits we’ve developed with screens. You need to defrag your mind. Get away from your smartphone, fast from social media, spend lengthy times when you’re alone with your thoughts, read the Bible, be in silence, and pray. Gracious Father, grant us peace of mind, focusing on Christ through the power of the Spirit—undistracted and unhurried. Amen!
