Compassion without authority results in chaos, and authority without compassion results in callousness. In the discussion on the value and sanctity of life, I spoke about the church’s need to say NO to Amendment G, and our need to resist “clergy” who advance the pro-choice position. Clarity and authority are key, yet more needs to be said; namely, an emphasis on compassion.
In a recent online post, Erin Hawley, a litigator and wife to Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, explains that, for women who terminate their pregnancy, more than 36% attend church once a month or more at the time of their first abortion. Hawley states, “If women don’t feel supported by the church, they’ll often go to abortion facilities.” Hawley proposes this answer: “We [Christians] must tell women that they matter more than their mistakes. That’s the gospel message, after all. And we must assure them that the church will stand beside them as they choose life, affirm their bravery, and promise to provide the village it takes to raise their children.”
While Christians should strongly affirm that abortion violates God’s holy ordinance of preserving human life and vote accordingly, we must also proclaim the eternal love of the Triune God for all women who search for meaning, strength, and forgiveness in whatever situations that they find themselves. Christ always offers hope. What can wash away all my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
