Recently, popular Bible teacher John Mark Comer posted a picture on Instagram of a new book that attacks belief in penal substitutionary atonement (PSA). To put it simply, PSA teaches that Christ died the death that we deserve, suffering the penalty of our sins. Comer wrote this: “This book seems to be the final biblical/exegetical knockout blow to PSA.” Comer seems to promote rejecting essential categories like of guilt, death, and wrath in regard to Christ’s death. How should we respond?
In this situation, Christians should put their foot down. Christ’s substitutionary death is central to the gospel message, as seen even in the OT from Isaiah 53. The prophet states in verse 5, “Upon him [the Messiah] was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” This passage, as well as several others, teach PSA (e.g., Rom 3:25; 2 Cor 5:21; Gal 3:13; and 1 Pet 2:24). Also, the apostles warn us against following distorted teachings. Specifically, Paul says in Rom 16:17: “Watch out for” and “avoid” those who “create obstacles contrary to the doctrine you have been taught.”
Some issues Christians can disagree about; others we can’t. As instances arise of the latter, the response from Christians must be firmness. Tolerating anti-gospel teaching or teachers isn’t loving. The death of Christ in the place of sinners is a non-negotiable of our Lord’s mission. To cancel this teaching is to cancel the central facet of the cross. May Christ’s word burn in our hearts (Jer 20:9).
