Vote for Sober-Mindedness

Another ballot issue that Christians should be aware of is Initiated Measure 29. According to Ballotpedia, this measure “would legalize the recreational use, possession, and distribution of marijuana along with marijuana paraphernalia for those individuals who are 21 and over.” It’s important to note that this specific measure concerns recreational use. While cannabis use for medical purposes has already been legalized in our state (see: SD Initiated Measure 26). Should Christians oppose Initiated Measure 29? Yes, I believe they should and here’s why.

The Bible commands behaviors such as sobriety, alertness, attentiveness, and clarity of mind. Peter tells us to “prepare our minds for action, being sober-minded” (1 Pet 1:13). Again, he explains, “Being sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion” (1 Pet 5:8). Paul instructs us to “not sleep as others do but let us keep awake and be sober” (1 Thess 5:6). The Lord Jesus Christ states, “Be on guard, keep awake. Stay awake” (Mark 13:33, 35). Marijuana use hinders this state of mind that Scripture commends. Further, plenty of studies show that marijuana harms, and I’ve seen this firsthand. My own brother (he’s now deceased) smoked pot as a young man and suffered terrible consequences: psychosis, other addictions, paranoia, anxiety, and depression. Marijuana ruined him. When you see this drug ruin your loved ones, you do all that is in your power to oppose it.

Our calling as Christians is to love God above all and to love neighbor as ourselves (Matt 22:37-39). Because pot use Dishonors God and ruins lives, I encourage you to vote NO on Initiated Measure 29.
