Going to church is important. In fact, it is commanded of believers in Hebrews 10:25, “Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another.” Gathering on Sunday is vital to the spiritual growth of the believer. Yet, I have often said that if that is all you do, then you are possibly missing out. Why? Because it is easy to fall through the cracks; to simply attend and leave while never engaging with other believers. Proverbs 27:17 says that “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” We are created for community, in God’s image. The Trinity exists in community, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:26-27). What if there was a way to grow throughout the week and build strong relationships, to dig deeper discussing the Word, pray, fellowship, and in essence do life together as believers?
There is a way, it is called home small group bible studies. Why at home? First, the early church met in homes, and in in the temple. Jesus taught in large groups (Sermon on the Mount), but he also discipled the Twelve. I recommend a small group of 10 or less. Jesus had twelve, but He is God! The home is a place where people show hospitality, share struggles, pray for one another, and hold one another accountable in ways that large gatherings often can’t.
Why small? In a small group, everyone has a voice. You can ask questions. It is vital to the discipleship process that life is modeled informally. It is hard to fake it when you are at home. Your faith there must be authentic. Small groups have been so important in my Christian life, I want everyone to experience it. Take the time, it will change your life.
